One-of-a-Kind - SOLD
Sterling Silver Yellowstone "Trout" Trophy Style Belt Buckle w/Gold, Mokume-gane, & Hand Engraving, #2007-1
shown on Straight Strap
This is a one-of-a-kind version of the lost wax cast Yellowstone "Trout" belt buckle, which is the first of the 2007 annual edition. This buckle is named for our first National Park by the same name, which boasts over 2600 miles of unparalleled trout rivers and streams. This buckle has a sheet of Mokume-gane behind the rainbow trout.
Mokume gane (Japanese for "wood grained metals") is a type of Japanese married metal made from diffusion bonded laminates often used in decorating swords, in this case consisting of sterling silver, copper, shibuichi, and shakudo. It is usually worked from the back to produce valleys and ridges on the front, which are filed and sanded to reveal a unique design. A specially formulated chemical treatment leaves a rich patina, highlighting the character of the metal's design. There is risk and discovery in making each piece. On this one-of-a-kind buckle the Mokume-gane also has 24K gold line-inlay and bright-cut hand-engraving to add to the feeling of sparkling, flowing water.
It is a heavy silver trophy style buckle with a swivel bail, allowing the buckle to lie flat. (See angled photo.) The scroll-work borders at the top and bottom have a swirling, flowing design, suggesting the edges of a riverbank. The horizontal band running across the center, makes it the River buckle. It is a dressy statement with the trout mounted like a trophy, - it's a keeper...
This belt buckle has a 1⅛" (28mm) wide opening, and accomodates a 1" (25mm) to 1⅛" belt strap. It is assembled from 2 pieces of silver and/or gold, and 1 piece of Mokume-gane soldered to the front. The main buckle body and the rainbow trout are cast in solid sterling silver (and 14K gold) from Neil's original hand engraved masters. It is hand finished and hand signed by the artisan.
Overall measurements are 1⅜" (35mm) high, and 2⅜" (60mm) long.
We welcome inquiries about more customized versions of this buckle. The possibilities are endless.
