This sweet, hand engraved Tabula Rasa Channel Belt Buckle has been on Neil's bench for a while, un-engraved. He finally took the time to engrave it recently, drawing purely on his own vision and artistic ideas. It depicts a close-up scene of vegetation. There is a bee at the top, left and a frog at the bottom, right. The vegetation below the gold band is heavier, larger leafed, dark underbrush. While the lighter, yet more prolific scrolls and leaves above the band indicate the lighter feel of vegetation that actually reaches the life-giving rays of the sun. The lower section is framed and the background is much deeper and darker. The leaves here are beautifully shaded creating a more three-dimensional rendering. The top section is left open to the "air".

The gold band was accidentally attached at a slight angle, which Neil made into a positive instead of a negative. He accomplished this through the asymmetric design lay-out, with the base of the scrolls off center, and the deeply sculpted flower stalk that starts there. It is hand-work, after all. In many steeped traditions of fine craft-work, imperfection is embraced by the masters. The rhythmic repetition of the border in the gold band works as a surprising, symmetrical counterpoint. It's easy to see from the overall feel of this engraving that Neil is further developing his own style from his seminar with Winston Churchill (GRS Masters Program Fall 2007).

Neil usually signs the back of his buckles, but he signed the front of this rare piece.
