Close-Up of Belt Buckle | Angled Close-Up of Belt Buckle
This sweet, hand engraved trophy-style buckle depicts a close-up scene of vegetation. There is a bee at the top, left and a frog at the bottom, right. The vegetation below the gold band is heavier, larger leafed, dark undergrowth. The leaves here are beautifully shaded creating a more three-dimensional rendering. The lighter, yet more prolific scrolls and leaves above the band indicate the lighter feel of a canopy that actually reaches the life-giving rays of the sun.
This is one of Neil's asymmetric designs. The base of the scrolls is off center, and the deeply sculpted flower stalk starts there. The rhythmic repetition of the border in the gold band works as a surprising, symmetrical counterpoint. It's easy to see from the overall feel of this engraving that Neil is further developing his own style from his seminar with Winston Churchill (GRS Masters Program Fall 2007).
Neil used his hinged bail for this trophy-style buckle. He likes this because it makes the belt easier to put on and more comfortable to wear. Neil usually signs the back of his buckles, but he also engraved his signature on the front of this piece.
