Close-Up of Buckle | Close-Up of Keepers | Close-Up of Tip
The Hatch is a large, heavy sterling silver buckle set. The buckle depicts a fisherman attaching a fly, while a German Brown Trout is rising for a mayfly hidden in the scrollwork on the tip. All four pieces of the set have 24K gold line-inlay; the fisherman's hatband, his fishingline, and fly; the edges of the keepers; and the mayfly on the tip.
The figures are more low relief sculpture, such as on a silver dollar, while the engraving is more like would be seen on a bank note. The scrollwork is classic leaf and tendril. The buckle scrollwork is shaped to an abstracted fish, the fish's head being below the fisherman's elbow. Movement is created by the keepers that lean into the flow of the river. Architecturally inspired crenelated borders contrast a graceful curve in the full set. Neil paid great attention to composition, which is one of the aspects of design he enjoys the most. The trout returns the eye to the rest of the set.
