This beautiful engraved quail belt buckle set for Todd is a new version of "7 Quail 7 Roses" from earlier this year (2007). It is a combination of engraving and relief sculpting. Todd wanted a buckle set like the first one, but Neil always wants to make changes. As a result of the influence from Winston Churchill who was the instructor at October's GRS seminar, Neil elongated the leaves in the scrollwork. This is also the first time he has engraved the back of the tip.

Like the first version, it depicts a covey of quail taking up from a rose thicket, with two hiding in the undergrowth and tendrils on the tip. Neil worked with the feeling of approximate symmetry while portraying the asymmetrical tangles of rose vines. The subtle trellis-work also creates a slight tension with the rose vines.

The quail are overlaid in 18K yellow gold, while the vines are 24K gold line-inlay. This time Neil also added pure silver inlay to the throats of the male birds, and 24K yellow gold to the females to add another element of realism; as the females have different coloring than the males. The border-style on the buckle and tip is also new for Neil. As always he is continuously experimenting with new design ideas.

Neil fabricated the roses from a tube of sterling silver, that is filled with six strands of 24K white gold wire around the outside and one strand of 24K yellow gold wire through the center. The remaining "cracks" aound the perimeter were filled with strands of yellow gold wire. The filled tube was then cut into slices and each slice was hammered flat. They were then soldered onto the buckle, keepers, and tip, and the final shaping was done in place. See Close-Up Sideview Composite for rose detail.
