Mike is an "old" customer who really enjoys his Tabula Rasa Channel Belt Buckle and has ordered more than one. He asked Neil if he knew anything about shakudo - an ancient Japanese metal alloy of 96% copper and 4% gold often used in decorations on Japanese sword fittings. Mike once lived in Japan and admires Japanese metalwork and aesthetics. Neil was familiar with shakudo, as we used to live in Clarkdale, Arizona, where the main US supplier of shakudo and mokume-gane (another Japanese alloy = wood grain) is located. However, he had never worked with it previously, but he was up to the challenge of trying something new, as usual.
The buckle is hand-crafted the same way as the master to Neil's Tabula Rasa is made. One of the main attributes of shakudo is that it patinas to a rich, midnight purple. It was Mike's idea to do the sun-rays in 24K gold line-inlay.
The name "Genesis" refers to "Let there be light..." Mike was very happy with the result, and sent Neil a copy of the book, "Lethal Elegance, The Art of Samurai Sword Fittings" by Joe Earle as a Thank You gift. It's a beautiful book, and Neil predicts it will impact his future work.
