Close-Up of Buckle | Close-Up of Scroll-Work & Diamond | Close-Up of Leaves | Back of Buckle
This spectacular and unique true trophy belt buckle was ordered by Marcelo. He's a leather-worker in Brazil, and wanted something to commemorate his best of show piece at the "IFoLG" (International Federation of Leather Guilds) in 2009. As Neil put it in an email to Marcelo when he submitted the buckle design for approval; "This is a very challenging buckle to make, but the rewards are great." This did, indeed, turn out to be true. It may be the most challenging buckle that Neil has made to date. The complexity of all the steps in the process were amazing (and sometimes scary) to watch, even for me. I usually give Neil a wide berth when he's working on these kinds of projects, especially when he's soldering... A lot of the work with a buckle like this is done on paper. That means not just the design itself, but also the planning and sequencing of all the steps. But the result was worth it!
The main body of the buckle is, of course, sterling silver, and it consists of two parts or layers. It's a picture-frame concept. The center with the lettering and the logo is the "picture"-layer. The lettering is 14K yellow and white gold, soldered onto silver. This layer is bead-blasted for a different texture adding another dimension. The "frame"-layer is the complex scroll-work with 24K inlay stems and the oval name-plate in 14K red gold, which is overlaid with a silver ribbon covered with an 18K yellow leaf. There are three bezel-set diamonds and four 18K red gold flowers with 24k centers. The background of the swivel knife and the 2009 is engraved and textured on the "picture" layer. The back of the buckle has a quick, sketchy engraving depicting Marcelo's winning piece; a western hat box.
This buckle is the most recent showing Neil's developing style with a ribbon at the bottom, and lighter engraving at the top.
